MNU Students’ Union along with the management of Maldives National University (MNU) has met with the General Secretary of Maldives Olympic Committee, Mr. Ahmed Marzooq.
In the meeting held with the General Secretary, who is also a member of the sports committee of Commonwealth Games and a member of media committee of Olympic Council of Asia, the Vice Chancellor of MNU Dr. Mohamed Shareef along with the 3 Deputy Vice Chancellors (Dr. Aishath Shehenaz Adam, Mr. Hussain Haleem and Ms. Aishath Shaheen Ismail) participated.

Abdulla Shahuneez, the Vice President (Wings) and Aminath Hameeza Ahmed, Secretary of MNUSU participated from the executive committee of MNU Students Union. Tagged along was the student representative at MNU Council, Mr. Ibrahim Ghanim Shahid and two members of MNUSU Advisory Board, Mr. Arushad Ashraf and Mr. Mohamed Shaan Amir who both are former presidents of MNUSU.
A lot of points were highlighted by the General Secretary Marzooq (Marey) in the meeting held at the conference room of MNU Central Administration. He stated that it is an important task to attract the athletes of the country to the national university of the country. He also stressed that athletes face a daunting and boring life at their “life after sports”. Thus, he suggested to open the doors of the university for these athletes which can benefit both parties in the long-term run.
Additionally, the General Secretary assured that his personal support will be given in order for the Union at MNU to create sports and recreation clubs. He added that he will also find support from the Olympic Committee.
General Secretary also gave a suggestion to make a University Sports Association which could work in order to facilitate sports competitions among the college/universities.
Marey also detailed on the works of International University Sports Federation with the opportunities available for the games conducted by the federation and the benefits it will bring of being a member of the federation.
Vice Chancellor Dr. Shareef welcomed the General Secretary to MNU and he stated that MNU is ready to work along with the Maldives Olympic Committee.
Deputy Vice Chancellor Mr. Hussain Haleem applauded the works of MNUSU and said that the creation of clubs will open up roads to reach much further.
Dean of Students Ms. Ashiya Leela Ahmed stated that works on making the clubs by the union are in progress and that things will be finalized in the coming weeks. In the meeting held on Thursday, 17th of September 2020, she added that careful consideration shall be given to balance the academic and sports activities in the union.
Mr. Arushad Ashraf, advisory board member and former president of MNUSU, stated in the meeting that students of MNU have been working at university and national level activities in organizing events. He further added that the expert advice from a personality such as Marzooq shall be a huge boost and that union is ready to work along with the Olympic Committee.
